Marty McConnell - Response From Someone Who’s Been There
This I’ve learned:
When she leaves, follow her.
To the sidewalk, to the street
Into traffic, to Kansas
And all the way back
You follow.
You will know by the caving of her eyes
By the aftershocks under her skin
By the tremor in her step
That sitting still is no option.
This is not about freedom,
This is about proof.
This is about giving her your skin because it just might ease her shivering.
This fissured woman has cracks you cannot cure with words, or come, or fists, or faith
But she is stronger than you or she give her credit for —
Tell her so.
This I’ve learned:
She will not always want you near her.
Follow anyway.
You will know by the stones in her throat,
By the granite under her gaze
By the square of her stance
That solitude is her choice now.
This is not about you.
This is about bruises that stay.
Ragged edge marks,
The chapter she tore out,
And the Ever After she’s still writing.
Leave if she asks you to.
She will find you again—
Or she won’t.
This is not about guarantees.
If you would understand,
Bed a woman made of windows,
Warm her frost-lined frame,
Do not touch her while she dreams.
Lure the experience off her skin.
Forge new stories and slip them under the slope of her cheek,
Feign sleep when she stirs and chooses the open air of another room
Over the closed chamber of your arms.
Tattoo her tales on the back of your wrist for reference and excuse.
Pretend nothing lasts anyway,
That we are just constructions of scar tissue and scabs.
Count her unsteady breaths.
Kiss her goodnight, two rooms away
Try not to dream of broken glass.
